Please note that Dr. Peterson currently limits his practice to diseases of the feline thyroid gland (concentrating on cats with hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism). Therefore, he no longer sees dogs or cats with other endocrine disorders, such as Cushing’s or Addison’s disease, diabetes, or hypercalcemia. He does not do phone consults or record reviews without seeing the patient. Dr. Peterson is sorry that he cannot consult on every dog or cat with endocrine disease, but he has decided to devote his remaining career to learning and publishing as much as he can about feline thyroid disease —a true epidemic!

If your dog or cat has a non-thyroidal endocrine disorder, we recommend that you first consult with the closest veterinary school or large veterinary specialty center, since that is where most internists with strong endocrine interests will be employed. Please note that endocrinology is not a recognized specialty in veterinary medicine, so no directory of veterinary endocrinologists exists. Therefore, we do not know specific endocrine specialists in many different regions of the country and cannot make a recommendation. That said, many veterinary internists have a strong interest in endocrinology. Your own primary veterinarian may also have input for locating the right specialist.
